Making history

PROUD OF OUR WORK

The name Tabacalera is tied to the history of cigars. The company is the natural heir to the Spanish Empire’s former tobacco trade with the Americas and its flourishing industry. Later, there was a merger with the former French tobacco monopoly (Seita) to create Altadis and, years later, its incorporation into the Imperial Brands Group. Set up as the premium cigar division of this British group, it returned to the historic name of Tabacalera and was acquired by a major group of international investors in October 2020.

Roots between Europe and the Americas
The origins of the Tabacalera Group date back to 1636, when the tobacco trade between the Americas and Europe was institutionalised. Tabacalera has maintained the essence of tobacco cultivation, manufacture and distribution for almost 400 years. It has always been guided by a respect for tradition and innovation. Two values that have enabled it to become the world’s oldest tobacco company.
Real Fábrica de Sevilla
The first factory in Europe was opened in 1758: the Real Fábrica de Tabacos de Sevilla, where tobacco from the Americas was processed. It was the second largest building in Spain at the time, second only to the Royal Palace in Madrid, and it is now home to the University of Seville.
Tobacco monopoly
The company’s status changed in 1887 when it was incorporated as a Compañía Arrendataria de Tabacos, or lease company, to manage the tobacco monopoly in Spain. It operated under this structure until 1945, when Tabacalera Sociedad Anónima, known throughout the world as Tabacalera, was set up at the end of the Spanish Civil War.
Birth of Altadis
With the new millennium in the year 2000, Tabacalera joined forces with Seita, the French tobacco company, and together they created Altadis, which at that time was the largest tobacco company in Europe. A tobacco group with enough financial and commercial strength to compete with the rest of the market.
Tabacalera, back to its origins
After acquiring Altadis in 2008, the Imperial Tobacco Group revived the name Tabacalera for its premium cigar division in 2013. Four centuries after its founding, Tabacalera is now the market leader in the premium cigar sector, maintaining both its roots and its careful selection of the world’s best cigars.
New Tabacalera
The new Tabacalera continues to grow based on the confidence of a group of international investors in October 2020.
